Humber Safety, with small front wheel, 1885

The safety bike is dominating the scene.

This bicycle is one of the first to use a chain drive. It is developed at the time of the high bi, when the search for the right proportions of the wheels is still ongoing. The drive is relegated to the bottom of the frame, a bicycle chain transports the pedalling power to the rear wheel. Later, equal sizes were used for front and rear wheels. This bike is called a Safety, because it is much safer than its risky predecessor, the high bi.
