Ice velocipede, France, ca. 1870

This velocipede from around 1870 was specially designed for riding on ice. The rear wheels have been replaced by small skates and the front wheel has large spikes. The spikes ensured grip on the ice. There were also a number of manufacturers of ice velocipedes in the Netherlands. Vehicles for use on ice also existed in the days of the balance bicycle. The rider wore special shoes with protrusions that clung to the ice. Otherwise it would not be possible to run a walking machine on ice.
