Course de vélocipèdes: le départ is a painting by Joseph Roux (1870). The painting shows the start of a bicycle race in the French town of Gray. Professional jockeys are pitted against amateurs in this painting. By the end of the 19th century, the bicycle has lost its elitist image. More often than not, classically trained painters are not interested in the 'vulgar' topic of bicycle races, which makes this painting rather special.
