Sociable, E. Meyer, Paris (France), 1873

This bike is a "Sociable". Unlike a normal tandem, you don't sit behind, but next to each other. Early examples of these bicycles had one side with only one functional handlebar, the seat for the other rider was simply a support. The side with one usable handlebar was usually for a man, the other for a woman. Sociable but not yet equal.
