Vélocipède Michaux, from France, 1868

The first two-wheeler with pedals.

The first bicycles with pedals mounted on the front axle are manufactured around 1864. The name of the inventor is still unknown, though most sources refer to Frenchman Pierre Michaux. The Olivier brothers predict a golden future for this bike and together with Michaux they set up a bicycle factory. In a short space of time, the bike becomes very popular. This vélocipède once belonged to Michaux himself. A brake on the rear wheel is set in motion by cranking up a belt around the handlebar. An iron curl adorns the front.
